Kirkby Lonsdale is a truly blessed town – situated in Cumbria, on the borders with Lancashire and North Yorkshire, and named after the valley of the beautiful River Lune. Flowing from the Howgill Fells above Tebay, the river tumbles then meanders through some of England’s loveliest but largely undiscovered countryside. The English Romantics recognised its merits – John Ruskin and JMW Turner saw that all the elements of a perfect romantic landscape could be seen from one spot. A clear, sparkling, meandering river; lush, pastoral meadows replete with contented cattle; heath-covered hilltops bare but for the heather and sparse grassland; ancient stone farm buildings and castles; and even the discernible signs of Neolithic settlements.
